Larry H. Ely, 64, passed away Friday, February 26, 2010. Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, March 3, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Howe, pastor of the church officiating. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery with flag detail by American Legion Post #224 of Dumas. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Larry was born March 21, 1945 in Amarillo, Texas to Walter and Ruth Ely. He grew up in Dumas and Sunray and graduated from Sunray High School in 1963. He served from 1965 to 1971 in the US Navy, during the Vietnam War. He was very patriotic and loved his country. In 1970 he married Ione Browder and she preceded him in death in 1993. In 1995 he married Linda Davis and became part of a family who adored him and whom he loved deeply. He was an avid musician and loved to share his talent of playing the guitar and fiddle with others, especially at family gatherings. In 2009 he became a member of the Yesteryear Band. He had a passion for all kinds of music, but his favorite was the blues.
Larry worked as a welder/operator for Continental Carbon for 37 years. An inventor by heart, he created some of the most unusual bicycles that everyone enjoyed riding. He never met anything he couldn’t fix. If he couldn’t fix it, it couldn’t be fixed. He was a jokester and loved to tease others and laugh. Larry loved spending time with his family, especially his two great-grandchildren, Brandi and Leland, whom were the joy of his life.
He had been a member of First Baptist Church since 1987. He loved his Lord and left a legacy of faith and strength to all who loved him and walked with him through his short but courageous battle with cancer. It was in dying that Larry taught us how to live.
He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Shelby Davis, mother-in-law, Bennie Hall, father-in-law, John Harmon, niece, Beverly Bennett and uncle, Hubert Norrell.
Survivors include; his wife Linda of the home; children, Kelly Davis of Dumas, Terri Gambrell and husband Joey of Channing, and Chad Ely and wife Mary Ann of Sunray; a loving brother, Gerald Ely and wife, Cheryl of Pampa; brother, Buzzy Ely and wife, Kay of Gillette, WY; grandchildren, Abby Tipton and husband Trey, Christen Davis all of Amarillo, Ariel and Sarah Gambrell of Channing, Garrett and Abigail Ely of Sunray; great-grandchildren Brandi and Leland Tipton of Amarillo; favorite aunt, Francis Norrell of Sunray; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and DeLynn Hall of Waco, Don and Barbara Wright of Muldrow, Okla, Larry and Judy Cummins of Pueblo, Colo, Bob and Janet Pomykala of Baytown, Fate Bennett of Fritch, Jackie Davis of Dumas; many nieces, nephews, cousins; his pecan-eating buddies, Pepper, Gracie, Tootsie and Maggie; and many friends, all of whom will greatly miss him.
The family suggests memorials be to Memorial Hospice, 224 E. 2nd, Dumas, TX 79029 or to the American Cancer Society, 403 Pear, Dumas, TX 79029.
The family will be at 525 N. Maddox in Dumas.
