Buford Allison Cummins

Buford Allison Cummins, 88, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2012. Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Calvary Baptist Church in Dumas with Rev. Brad Foster, pastor of the church officiating. Interment will follow in Northlawn Memorial Gardens. A flag detail will be provided by American Legion Post 224 of Dumas. There will be a family visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, September 28, 2012 at the funeral home. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors. Buford was born on October 26, 1923 in Hollis, Oklahoma to Ira and Maggie Cummins. He served in the Army during World War II as a staff sergeant tank commander and was awarded the Silver Star for his valor during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he returned to Oklahoma where he met and married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Moyer, on November 4, 1947. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Sundown, Texas where Buford tried his hand at dry land cotton farming. Then in 1957 they moved to Dumas, Texas. Buford worked for American Zinc for 15 years then went on to work as an insulator and millwright until poor eyesight led him to retire in 1987. Woodworking and leather working were among Bufords favorite hobbies, and he was very gifted at both. Long after his eyesight began to fail, he could be found in the shop making something out of wood or leather. He enjoyed fishing, camping and bird hunting in his younger years and he was a devout Texas Tech Red Raiders fan. In his spare time Buford loved to read and listen to western music. Once his eyesight became too poor to read, he began to listen to books on cassette tape. He enjoyed James Michener, Louis LAmore and other western authors. He enjoyed listening to Waylon Jennings, Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline, but the Old Rugged Cross was one of his favorite songs. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to manyBuford left an indelible mark on those who knew him. He was a member of VFW Post 9022 and Calvary Baptist Church. He was a faithful Christfollower with a servants heart, which was evidenced through his service to his country, family, church, community and friends. Buford was preceded in death by a son, Gary grandson, Michael five brothers, Aaron, Vern, Wendell, Donald and Arthur and two sisters, Inez and Ola Dean. Survivors include two sons, Larry and wife Judy of Pueblo, Colorado, Terry and wife Denise of Dumas, Texas daughter Connie and husband Gordon of Somonauk, Illinois sisters Margaret Hassell of Oolagah, Oklahoma, Velma Charles of Talala, Oklahoma, Peggy Tsukahara of Wylie, Texas brother, Nolan Cummins of Seminole, Oklahoma 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, numerous other relatives and many friends all of whom will greatly miss him.
