Carl Robert Bob Self, 83, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009 in Dumas. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Northlawn Memorial Gardens with flag detail by American Legion Post 224 of Dumas. Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church with Fred Hughes, long time family friend officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Bob was born June 17, 1925 in McKinney, Texas to Robert and Eva Self. He served in the US Army during WWII with the occupational forces in Japan. On September 6, 1953 he married Oleta Skipworth in McKinney. He worked with the J.C. Penny Co. in Abilene and Clovis, NM. In August of 1959 he opened Bob Self Shoes and retired in 1985. He also managed B D Lawn mowing Service for 13 years with his grandsons Brandon and Derek.
Bob was a lifetime member of Dumas Noon Lions Club, served on the Dumas City Council, was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and a longtime member of the choir at First United Methodist Church. He was also the biggest fan of the Dumas Demons for fifty years. Bob had been a resident of Dumas since 1959 and was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include; his wife, Oleta of the home; sons, Larry Skipworth of Dallas, Charles Skipworth and wife, Ellen of Dumas; daughters, Lana Iverach and husband, Bryan of Sydney, Australia and Diana Williams of Elgin; grandchildren, Steven Skipworth, Carol Jean Meine, Eric Glover, Ambra Finstad, Brandon Skipworth, Derek Skipworth and Richard Williams; sister, Juanita Branch of McKinney and brother-in-law Jimmy Christian of Van Alstyne; 11 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great-Grandchild.
