Born July 22, 1940 in Wellington, Texas to Mac and Leona (Powell) Fletcher. Don's parents moved to Moore County and Don attended school in Sunray starting in the 3 rd grade. He graduated from Sunray High School in 1959. From there, he attended Texas Tech University for a short period.
Don married his high school sweetheart, Amy Norrell on January 30, 1960.
Don worked in the oil and gas industry for over 50 years as a welder. After trying retirement for a short time, he went to work for Wes Spurlock for a few years. At the age of 80, Don was hired by Sunray ISD to teach welding. Don always said he was the oldest “new hire” in the state of Texas. It was his dream job! He loved his students and loved to see them advance in their skills.
In January 2022, Don and Amy moved to Pottsboro, Texas to be closer to family. His pride and joy was his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved attending all their sports, FFA, and 4H activities. He was always ready to pitch in with their livestock projects. He was always in the middle of activities. He loved the Sunray Bobcats, ready to help out anywhere he could be helpful.
Over the years, Don coached Little League baseball, Pee Wee football, and also served on the Sunray Fire Dept. and Sunray ISD school board. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sunray. He served on many church boards and prepared and served food for the Methodist Youth group on Wednesday nights. Don and his long time friend, John Boney, teamed up along with their smokers to cook for the Make a Wish Foundation annual fund raising events. They were also invited to cook for the Nascar drivers in Dallas after the race. He loved the experience! Don loved to fish and upland hunting. Some of his greatest memories and blessings were made with his many friends at the Sunray Senior Citizens organization.
