Donald R. Johnson, 72, passed away Tuesday, November, 3, 2009 in Dumas, Texas. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 7, 2009 at South Georgia Baptist Church, in Amarillo, with Rev. Bob Miller, pastor of the church officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Donald R. Johnson was born January 26, 1937 in Shamrock, Texas to Robert and Nora Johnson. On December 28, 1965 he married Mickie Fulks in Amarillo. He was a coach basketball, football, and track and principal for 36 years. He coached in Adrian, Briscoe, Quitaque, Claude, Darrouzett, New Home, and Channing. He took basketball teams to State championships three times. Don was intense in his coaching and believed in discipline for his players. He loved the outdoors, horses, family and friends. He retired in 1996 after 25 years as principal of Channing ISD. Don had been a resident of Channing since 1971 and was a member of First Baptist Church in Channing. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale Johnson in 2007; sisters, Evelyn Callaghan in 2008, Wanda Brown in 1999; brothers-in-law, Wesley Terry, Buck Duncan and Jerol Morris. Survivors include; his wife, Mickie of the home; sisters, Belva Terry , Robena Duncan both of Artesia, NM, Martha Morris of Wellington; brother, Dean Johnson and wife Agatha of Tulia; and special friends, Greg Welch and Sandra Richmond. Don would want to thank family and friends for all of their support, prayers and comfort during his illness. The family suggests memorials be made to Memorial Hospice, 224 E. 2nd, Dumas, TX. 79029.
