Edmund J. Backus, 67, passed away Friday, November 21, 2008 in Dumas, Texas. Rosary will be held at 6:00 PM, Monday, November 24, 2008 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Nazareth, TX with Fr. Juan Carlos Barragan, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church officiating, assisted by Fr. Ken Keller, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery at Nazareth with flag detail by American Legion Post 528 of Nazareth. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Edmund J. Backus was born February 8, 1941 in Amarillo, Texas to Leslie and Helen Backus. He served 3 years in the US Army. He retired from Growers Ag Service and then worked for Jack Oldham Oil as a transport driver from 1991 thru 2008. He was owner of Backus Sons Trucking Co. from 1968 thru 2008. Edmund had been a member of The Knights of Columbus since he was 18 years old. He currently is a 4th degree Knight. He was a former resident of Nazareth for 27 years before moving to Dumas in 1968. Edmund was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Survivors include; son, Quentin Backus and wife Terry of Middletown, DE; daughters, Sherry Lynn Backus Walters of Dumas, Charlyn Backus Rickerd of Nazareth; brothers, Hubert Backus and wife Joan of Nazareth, Francis Backus and wife, Connie of Hereford; Sister, Catherine Backus of Nazareth; grandkids, Mikka Keeling, Derrick and Gunnar Walters, Deven, Amber and Breana Bre Bre Backus, Clayton, and Brooke Carrithers; great-grandkid, Bryson Keeling of Dumas. Memorial may be made to the Knights of Columbus, Dumas Council 5061, PO Box 503, Dumas, TX or to Moore County Livestock Association, PO Box 581, Dumas, and TX 79029. The family will be at 105 Ted Street.
