Harold Basil \x93Dunk\x94 Duncan, 86 of Dumas, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2015. Graveside Services are scheduled for 9:30 in the morning on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Northlawn Memorial Gardens with Pastor Tom Wylie officiating and Rev. Jerry Howe assisting. A Memorial Service will follow at 11o\x92clock at the Presbyterian Church. Friends and family are encouraged to gather at Morrison Funeral Home from 6pm to 8pm on Monday, April 27, 2015 to remember and celebrate his life. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
Basil was born September 20, 1928 in Hico, TX. He spent his youth playing sports as a \x93Fighting Chickasha Chick\x94 from Chickasaha, Oklahoma. His father owned the icehouse in town and he learned his work ethic growing up in the family business. \x93Dunk\x94 served in the Korean War after graduating from Oklahoma A&M. He met Marilu Smalter in Chicago while he was employed as an insurance adjuster. They married in 1956 and started their family in Chicago. Along the way, their daughter Jean was born in Chicago, IL; Scott in Michigan City, IN; and Don in Amarillo, TX.
Employment with Shamrock was the incentive to move to Dumas, TX in 1964. Basil was head of the Safety Department for 15 years and Human Resource Director for 12 years. He retired in 1990 and worked on perfecting his golf game, playing racquetball, enjoying community service, \x93house boating\x94 on Lake Meredith, and basically living life to its fullest.
Basil\x92s diversified interests and associations included being a member of the Association of Safety Engineers, coaching Little League football and baseball, as well as teaching GED classes. He was a member of the Men\x92s Investment club serving as president several years. Dunk enjoyed being a member of the Lions Club, running the hot dog stand during Dumas Doggie Days for a number of years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, and also attended the Presbyterian Church. Basil was committed to community and country and belonged to the American Legion and was a 32nd degree Mason. Along with his wife, he was a member of a couples 42 group, a couples Bridge club, and the 35\x92s Dance Club. He was active in community service and was recognized, along with his wife, Marilu Duncan, as Old Timer \x94Couple\x94 of the Year in 2013.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Currie and Hazel Duncan.
Basil is survived by his older brother, Darrel Duncan; by his wife Marilu Duncan; his children and their spouses Jean and Orlando Lobo, Scott and Penny Duncan, Don and Abby Duncan; his grandchildren Natalie Pollock, Amanda Grove, Lindsey Duncan, Lottie Duncan, Allyson Duncan, Delaney Duncan; and 4 great-grandchildren Kade Pollock, Hunter Pollock, Reagan Pollock, and Adeline Duncan. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
