Rev. H.L. Stevens, 93, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, July 12, at First Assembly of God with Rev. Robert Slaton, Rev. Cliff Houghton, Rev. Glenn Beavers, Rev. Billy Nickell, long time family friends officiating. Burial will be in Northlawn Memorial Gardens by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Rev. Stevens was born September 8, 1916 in McComb, Oklahoma to W.L. and Cora L. Stevens. On February 25, 1936 he married Ruby Pearl Rearick. She preceded him in death. On September 8, 1996 he married Pat Nichols in San Antonio. Rev. Stevens was an ordained minister with the Assembly of God Church. He began ministering as a junior in high school and after graduating he and his wife ministered and were pastors in Minco and Blair, Oklahoma, and later moved to Nocona. In 1939 they moved to Sunray and in 1944 they moved to Dumas where they pastored First Assembly of God church for forty years. He retired in 1984 but continued serving his Lord in multiple capacities in the area and nation.
Rev. Stevens served in various community capacities: including a member of the Dumas Police Examining Board, the Salvation Army and Moore County Child Welfare. He was the chaplain of the Dumas Fire Department for many years. In 1956 at the Shamrock Oil Refinery fire he counseled firemen and families. He also ministered and counseled Shamrock employees, their families and many Moore County residents affected by the tragedy. In addition he faithfully held church services for the nursing home residents. During his years of ministry, Bro. Stevens served as mens director and CA president of the West Texas District. He served as organizer for smaller churches in the area. He was the first youth director of youth camps in the Assembly of God organization in the nation.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Effie Bell, Pearl and Billy Joe Stevens.
Survivors include his wife, Pat of the home daughters, Diane Stevens of Castle Rock, CO, Linda Kitchens of Bastrop son, Russell Stevens of Huntsville daughterinlaw, Carol Stevens of Dumas, sisters, Freida Stevens of Redondo Beach, CA. and Delsie Jones of Arroyo Grande, CA grandchildren, Carmen Young of San Francisco, CA, Andrea Valenzuela and husband David, Holly Mares and husband Zeke all of Dumas, Jason Stevens and wife, Lori of Amarillo greatgrandchildren, Derrick and Drake Valenzuela and Abby and Chloe Mares.
The family suggests memorials be to First Assembly of God, PO Box 764, Dumas, TX 79029.
The family will be at 1217 S. Bliss in Dumas.
