James E. Bowen, 87 of Sunray, passed away on Friday, October 26, 2018. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at First Assembly of God Church in Sunray with Royce Matthews, pastor of the church presiding, Carl Savage, former pastor assisting. Interment will follow in Lane Memorial Cemetery in Sunray. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
James was born January 18, 1931 in Atoka, OK to William Ernest and Sarah Ellen (Weathers) Bowen. He attended schools there and graduated from Limestone Gap High School in 1949. James quickly moved to Texas where he worked as a supervisor for Northern Natural Gas Company. He met the love of his life, Louella Green and they were married for 63 years. They made Sunray their home where they raised their children, Ray and Gay. James enjoyed being a trickster and playing ornery jokes. His 'Happy Place' was Red River, New Mexico. He and Louella spent 31 years being good citizens of Red River. James would take people on snowmobile tours of the area and spent many hours at Shotgun Willie's caf refilling coffee for all his friends. He loved to collect painted saw blades and his favorite one hangs above the fireplace in Red River. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Sunray and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
James is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.
He is survived by his wife Louella of the home; son; James Ray and wife Christi of Arlington, TX; daughter; Belinda Gay Bowen of Lubbock, TX; granddaughters; Brandi Bowen of Buchanan VA and Lindsay Kay Rockafellow of Lubbock; grandson: Dusty Parker and wife Brittney of Arlington, TX; great-granddaughters: Alyssa and Shay Bowen of Buchanan, VA; great-grandson; Timothy Keese of Lubbock; and sister; Faye McDonald of Kimble SD.
