James Edward Jim Ed Morton, 86 of Dumas, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2011. Services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 9th and Bliss Church of Christ in Dumas. Bryan Gary, minister of the church will be officiating. There will be a family visitation at Morrison Funeral Directors in Dumas from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, October 24, 2011. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
Jim Ed was born Sept. 13, 1925, in Amarillo to W.J. Morton, Jr. and Willie Edwards Morton of Moore County. He was a lifelong resident of Moore County. Jim Ed grew up in rural Moore County, attended Palo Duro School and graduated from Dumas High School in 1943.
He went to work for Scott Spencer Motor Company, later Owens Ford, in Dumas, in 1948 as a mechanic and later parts manager at Owens Ford in Dumas, retiring in 1990. In retirement, Jim Ed worked on the Morton family farm and volunteered at the Window on the Plains Museum. He loved classic cars and loved to drive the old Model T Ford in the Dogie Days and Sunray Funday parades every year.
Jim Ed married Nora Lee Lewis on Nov. 28, 1947, in Amarillo. They had three sons, Jed Morton of Sunray, Darwin Morton of Lancaster, and Jones Morton of Dumas. He was affectionately known as Papa Jim to his grandkids and all of their friends.
Jim Ed is survived by his wife, his brother Harold Dean Morton of Dumas, his sister Genevieve Crossland of Tinley Park, Ill., three sons, eight grandchildren, and 14 greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
