Jean M. Barnhart, 95, was called home by her Lord on December 10, 2020, in Dumas, Texas.
Jean entered this life on January 23,1925, in Reed, Oklahoma. She was the fourth of nine children born to Claude C. and Mamie Parker Moss. She married Robert E. Barnhart on January 15, 1945, in Dumas, Texas.
Jean graduated Vinson High School, Vinson, Oklahoma, in 1943 and accepted a scholarship to attend Draughn's Business College in Amarillo. After completing an advanced business course there, she accepted a job in the chemistry lab at the Cactus Ordnance Works, at Cactus, Texas. It was at Cactus that Jean and Robert met. They had been married more than 60 years at the time of his passing.
Jean was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to serve as postmaster at the Cactus Post Office in 1956, where she worked for the following 36 years. During her time as postmaster, she held various offices in the National Association of Postmasters.
Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church at Etter, teaching Sunday School there for more than 25 years. She and Robert moved to Dumas in 1991 and became members of the First Baptist Church of Dumas.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers Carroll Moss, Mancil Moss, Cecil Moss, Dale Moss, and Donald Moss, and sisters, Fern Dale and Zoe Carter. She is survived by two daughters, Gloria Rummel and husband, Dean, of Fritch, and Gwen Barnhart of Dumas; two granddaughters, Christi Hinson and husband, Bob, of Lubbock, and Karen Rummel, of Amarillo; three great grandchildren, Brett Hinson of Houston, Ryan Hinson of Lubbock, and Tenley Rummel of Amarillo, a brother, Bob Moss of Cheyenne, Oklahoma, and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to gratefully thank the staff of Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their tireless efforts in caring for Jean for the last seven years.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family suggests memorials be made to your favorite charity in Jean's honor.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 2 oclock in the afternoon on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at Morrison Memorial Chapel with Jordan Mills, officiating. Interment will follow at Northlawn Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Beeson ~ Morrison Funeral Directors.
