Jerry Dane Mixon, 71, formerly of Dumas, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2009 at home in Amarillo. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Morrison Memorial Chapel with Bob Thomas, chaplain of Odyssey Hospice of Amarillo officiating. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Jerry Dane Mixon was born June 1, 1938 in Kelton, Oklahoma to Harrell and Floy Mixon. He was a graduate of Dumas High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Southwestern University at Weatherford, Okla. and his masters degree in education from West Texas State University. On December 22, 1989 he married the love of his life and best friend, Cecilia in Amarillo.
Dane began his teaching career at Crockett Jr. High School in 1960. He taught at Travis Middle School and then moved to Palo Duro High School and taught there for 20 years. He retired in 2004. He was loved by all his students and respected by the faculty. He loved to travel around the United States, especially to Laughlin. He was a fantastic cook and loved to cook for his family. He was a member of the Texas Twister square dancing club. His greatest joy was decorating and cooking for Christmas. He had been a resident of Amarillo for 30 years and was a member of Paramount Terrace Christian Church and Journeymen Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Mickey Dean Mixon; brothers, Charles Arthur Mixon, Keith Mixon, and infant brother, Terry.
Survivors include; his wife, Cecilia of the home; son, Kristopher Donald Mixon and friend Charlene Willeby of Gruver; daughter, Cynthia Medeiros Mixon of Amarillo; special daughter, Shelley Shello Lynn Mays of Amarillo; nephews, Jerry Don Mixon and wife, Kim, Terry Wayne Mixon and wife, Ione all of Amarillo, Kelly Mixon and wife, Tammy of Ft. Worth; nieces Toni Kana of Levelland, Kerri Kim Blair and husband Mike of Satanta, KS; uncle, Vernie Mixon of Dumas; aunts, Vera Walker and husband Kenneth of Dumas, Helen Mixon of Sudan; daughter-in-law, Kimberly Kay Mixon of Amarillo; sister-in-law, Vicki Mixon of Levelland; numerous grandchildren adopted in his heart; numerous great-nieces and nephews; numerous great-great-nieces and nephews; and his two faithful companions, Baby and Sassy Sue. Family visitation will be from 6 - 8 pm on Tuesday at the chapel.
