Jesus R. Chavez, 93, of Dumas passed away on Friday, December 30, 2016. A Rosary will be recited at 6 o'clock in the evening on Monday, January 2, 2017 at Morrison Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Gabriel Garcia as celebrant. Interment will follow at Dumas Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
Jesus was born March 8, 1923 to Donaciano and Petra (Ramirez) Chavez in Gran Morelos, Chihuahua Mexico. He married Rafaela Santillan on March 31, 1954 in Chihuahua. Jesus loved to work on the farm and after moving to Dumas he worked for Donnie Schuman and Toliver farms. Jesus enjoyed working in the yard and collecting miniature John Deere tractors. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Dumas. Jesus deeply loved his children and grandchildren and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by grandsons: Christopher Chavez and LCpl Joshua Christopher Alonzo; and son-in-law: Tom Atchley; three sisters and two brothers.
Jesus is survived by his wife Rafaela of the home: seven children; Jesus Chavez and wife Maria of Dumas, Rose Atchley of Perryton, Jose Chavez of Edna, Alicia Alonzo and husband Daniel Ruiz, Julie Chavez, Ralph Chavez and wife Valerie all of Dumas, Danny Chavez and girlfriend Katina Leigh of Amarillo; sister: Consuelo Chavez de Gonzalez of El Paso; 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog: Maggie.
