John Bailey Anderson, 90 long time Dumas resident went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 23, 2016. Funeral Services are scheduled for 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday, February 26, 2016 at Temple Baptist Church with Rev. Jay McGaughy, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will follow at Northlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 o'clock until 7 o'clock in the evening on Thursday at the funeral home. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
John was born on September 4, 1925 in Brownwood, TX to Hugh C and Beatrice Anderson. He was raised in Brownwood and at the age of seventeen years, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served his first year at Chambers Field Naval Air Station Virginia. He went on to serve two and half years on the heavy cruiser, The USS Baltimore. During his time on the ship, they participated in 33 Naval Engagements with enemies. At the time of his honorable discharge, he was classified as a Radarman 3rd Class. The medals he earned are still on display in his den. After leaving the Navy, he came to Dumas where he met and married, Jeanette Lummus, The Love of His Life.
He was employed with Colorado Interstate Gas Co. for thirty-seven and half years until his retirement.
John was a volunteer Firefighter for forty years serving for a time as Chief of Volunteers in the 60's. He was also a 32nd degree Mason of the Masonic Lodge 1009. After 50 years, he received an honorary lifetime membership. John was a member of the American Legion and longtime member of Temple Baptist Church. He was also an instructor for the Bureau of Mines First Aid and an instructor for Defensive Driving.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeanette, his parents: Hugh and Emma Anderson and Beatrice and Marvin Dwight; two sisters: Nell Mitchell and Wanda Forrasnow; one brother: Gary Anderson; and one son: John Anderson, Jr.
John is survived by his children: one son: Ray Anderson and wife Mary of Dumas; five daughters: Cindy Anderson of Canyon, Ramona Bumpus and husband Jim, Darla Anderson, Karen Tate and husband Raymond all of Dumas, Debbie Eslick and husband Dale of Spearman; five sisters: Gwen White and husband Dean of Early, Jo Taff and husband Larry of Hull, Vivian Hatter of Dumas, Evelyn Reed of Foulsom, LA and Donna Sue Hess; twenty-eight grandchildren, thirty-eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a multitude of close family friends.
