John B. Butler

John Jay B. Butler, 90, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2010. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, March 2, at First Baptist Church of Dumas with Rev. Jerry Howe, pastor of the church officiating. Masonic graveside rites will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery, Sunray, by Masonic Lodge 1009 of Dumas. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Jay B. Butler was born March 25, 1919 in Stonewall County, Texas to John and Ethel Butler. On November 29, 1938 in Grassland, Texas he married Blanche Bea Hodge. From 1944 to 1946 , he served in the US Navy in San Diego, Calif. He worked in the monument business through out Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. He worked as a millwright for Brown and Root, building the Phillips plant in Cactus. In 1946 he bought his first section of land and continued farming and ranching until his retirement. After retirement he and Bea traveled through out the United States. His hobbies included dominos, bridge and fishing. He was a former member of First Baptist Church in Sunray and Cactus. While at Cactus, he helped build the church building, was a deacon, taught the mens Sunday school class and served as treasurer. He was a 32nd Degree Mason receiving his 60 year pin in 2009. He also was a 60 year member in the Order of the Eastern Star and twice served as Worthy Patron. Jay B. was a member of First Baptist Church in Dumas and had been a resident of Moore County and Dumas since 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Eva Lou Terrell, brother, S.G. Butler and sister, Anna Mae Duckett. Survivors include his wife, Blanche Bea of the home daughter, Sharon Barnes and husband, Dale of Bryan soninlaw, David Terrell of Dumas sister, Athleen Reed of Clovis, NM brother Bill Butler of Stillwater, Okla grandchildren, John Terrell, Jaylyn Terrell, both of Amarillo, Joann Terrell of Borger, Kelli Mishima of Japan, Kim Sanders of Austin 8 greatgrandchildren and 5 greatgreatgrandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Dumas Masonic Lodge 1009, 824 S. Maddox, Dumas, TX 79029 or to Dumas Nursing Rehab, 315 E. 19th, Dumas TX 79029.
