John Ewers passed away on February 5, 2024. He was born on April 27, 1962.
A graveside service will be held at 10 o’clock in the morning at Stratford Cemetery on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. A memorial service will follow at Heritage Hall located at 206 N Main St, Stratford, TX at 11:00 AM. In honor of John, fellowship to follow the service.
John's parents were Tom and Dixie Ewers. John was a life-long resident of Stratford, Texas. Growing up, he was extremely close to his older brothers and sister (Tucker, Jerry, and Theresa Ewers), as he was with his numerous cousins and friends. John spent his childhood working and playing on the panhandle plains. He enjoyed horses, cattle, and had an unrivaled passion for the outdoors. He began his career early, working alongside grown men at an early age.
In 1984, he married Lauri Ewers. John and Lauri raised 3 children (Marca, Johnna, and Cody).
In 2021, John welcomed his first granddaughter, Annie Irene Ewers. Quickly, Annie became the apple of John’s eye. John was a beloved father and grandfather, respected and adored by his children and granddaughter.
In 2012, he married Jennifer Wells. Together they enjoyed ranching.
To say John Ewers was a hardworking man would be understatement. His talent for business, commitment to his community, family and employees, was unrivaled. He was a strong-willed individualist breed, the last of his kind. Tough, resilient, and fiercely independent, John was never intimidated by a challenge and embraced the path less taken. Ever committed to his work, when asked his favorite sound, he recently stated, “a diesel motor”. John was a patriot. Memories of him shouting “America” at the top of his lungs (among other colorful sayings) are easily conjured for those close to him. He possessed unparalleled grit and determination that he used to create a true American dream.
In addition to his remarkable talent for numbers and business, John had a knack for mischief. Always quick with a joke, quip, hardy growl and big laugh, John filled the plains with boisterous energy and enthusiasm for any task at hand, even if that was making a joke at the expense of his friends and family. It has been said that John was the most honest and grumpy man in the county, both of which are likely true. You never doubted where you stood with John Ewers. For as rough as he was around the edges, John was generous, courageous, compassionate, and brilliant. He was an irreplaceable true Texas plainsman – and he will be deeply missed. During John’s life there was only one other man he ever thought his equal, and in the words of that cowboy, “it’s been one hell of a party”. – Augustus McCrae – Lonesome Dove.
John leaves behind many who loved him as he goes to join his beloved mother, father, brother, and sister. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Sherman County Livestock Show at: PO Box 540, Stratford, Texas 79084.
