John William Smith, 78 of Dumas, passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2018. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Dumas Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
John was born on October 11, 1939 in Dalhart, TX to William S. "Red" Smith and Mary Ellen "Babe" Switzer Smith. He had most of his schooling at Middlewater, TX and graduated from Dalhart High School in 1956 at the age of 16. At the age of 10 years old, he assisted in the capture of an outlaw at Middlewater, TX and was made an honorary law officer for life. He moved to Dumas, TX in 1960's and worked for Carbon Black plant; helped build American Beef Packing House; and retired from there many years later. John loved sports, especially golf and football. He also enjoyed hunting.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Edna, parents and a brother, Zeno Smith.
John is survived by his daughter; Tracy Edwards and husband Stephen of Burleson, TX; granddaughter: Kristen Ewers and husband Aaron of Orange, TX; great grandchildren: Zoe, Zeno and Ace of Orange, TX; brother: George Smith and wife Mary Ann of Alliance, NE; sister: Bertha Gustin of Graham, TX and nieces, nephews and cousins. Step son Bob Christian and wife Teresa of Channing, TX and their families.
