Kenneth Ray Dillard, 78, died Thursday, October 15, 2009 in Dumas. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 21, 2009 in Morrison Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jerry Howe, pastor of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Northlawn Memorial Gardens with flag detail by American Legion Post 224 of Dumas. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Kenneth Ray Dillard was born December 1, 1930 in Covington, Oklahoma. He was the only child born to Leonard Ray and Anna LaVerne Barber Dillard. He started school in Sunray and graduated from Dumas High School in 1950. He served in the US Army for two years during the Korean conflict and was stationed in Germany in 1951 and 1952. After returning from the service, he met and married the love of his life, Peggy Ann Magerkurth, on March 16, 1956 in Dumas. To this union was born their only child, Kenneth Ray Dillard, Jr.
Kenneth worked for Phillips Petroleum in Borger before moving to Dalhart where he was owner-operator of the Air Speed Service Station. He then was employed by the Texas Department of Transportation for 25 years where he retired as maintenance foreman in 1992. In Dalhart he attended the First Baptist Church. He served as Daddy in the two year old Sunday school class until he retired and moved to Dumas.
He was an avid band booster in Dalhart for seven years. He helped build the Dalhart Band Booster concession stand in 1976. He was named the Golden Wolf Band Booster of the Year in 1978. Kenneth served as assistant Boy Scout Master. During this time, his son, Ray achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. In 1993, he was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease which limited his ability to be as active as he would have liked. He played golf until the disease prohibited it. He was an avid painter of ceramics and produced detailed string-wire art. He also loved working outdoors and always had a beautiful yard.
Kenneth was a very quiet, wise, and compassionate person. He loved people and desired to help everyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Tye Goddard.
Survivors include; his wife, Peggy of the home; son, Ray and wife, Lorrie of Toronto, Canada; granddaughters, Kristen, Shannon and Megan ONeill of Austin; sister-in-law, Sue Kitchens and husband, Sonny; nephew, Scott Goddard; great-nephew, Houston Goddard; great-niece, Tori Goddard all of Dumas; two uncles and numerous cousins.
The family suggests memorials be to the Activity Department, Memorial Nursing and Rehab or Memorial Home Health, 224 E. 2nd, Dumas, TX. 79029.
The family will be at 1010 E. 8th in Dumas.
