L. D. Choo Choo Spears, 91 of Dumas, passed away on Monday, October 15, 2012. Services are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 19, 2012, at First United Methodist Church in Dumas. Rev. John Sanders, pastor of the church will be officiating. Interment will follow in Northlawn Memorial Gardens. There will be a family visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 18, 2012, at the funeral home. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
L.D. was born on January 15, 1921 in Merkel, Texas to Henry and Lela Spears. L.D. honorably served his country in the US Navy, and aboard the U.S.S. Whipple. He was united in marriage to Inez Irene Neu on February 13, 1943 in Clinton, Oklahoma. They shared their lives together just short of sixty years, before her passing in 2002. L.D. had been a resident of Dumas since 1956. He was employed by Santa Fe Railroad as an Agent Telegrapher until his retirement in 1981. Between L.D. and his father, they had a total of ninetyone years of service with Santa Fe. L.D. was a member of First United Methodist Church.
L.D. led a very active life. He was a long time member of the Dumas Noon Lions Club, and was ex Boss Lion. He always ran the bear pitch booth during the annual Dogie Days celebration. L. D. was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow for his dedication and lifetime achievement with the Lions Club. L.D. was an avid fisherman and a very skilled woodworker. He was actively involved in his church and the community. L.D. was a Life Member of the Moore Co. Chamber of Commerce and was in charge of the yard of the week program for several years, along with various other projects. L.D. will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Inez, and his stepmother, Estelle Spears.
L.D. leaves behind one son, Larry D. Spears of Amarillo three nieces, Mary Sue Hutchinson and husband Hoyt, JoAnn Tyra and husband Gene, and Lou Etta Sullivan one great niece, Sabra Futrell and husband Brent of Dumas his special friend, Betty Whitson of Dumas and countless great and greatgreat nieces and nephews.
