Lena Catherine White, 90, a former longtime Dumas resident, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2010. The funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. on Friday, December 31, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Dumas with Rev. Roy Kornegay of Amarillo officiating. Interment will follow in Northlawn Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Catherine was born on August 29, 1920 in Faxon, Oklahoma to Cullen and Lena Simmons. She married James Henry White on February 17, 1952 in Dumas. He preceded her in death on June 27, 1996. Catherine received a Bachelors Degree in Business from Hardin Simmons University in 1942 and a Masters Degree in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1945. She was a piano instructor, an active community member and a homemaker.
Catherine was a member of First Baptist Church in Dumas, TX for over 50 years. She was an Instructor in the Adult Literacy Program, working with the Spanish, Laotian, Vietnamese, and Bosnian communities. She helped build the Baptist Spanish Mission in Dumas and served on various Womens Missionary Union and other church committees. Over the past 15 years, Catherine resided in Amarillo, TX.
Survivors include two daughters, Melinda White of Venice, California and Mayna White of West Bend, Wisconsin one grandson, Jonathan Luke Watson of Lake Forest, California and numerous nieces and nephews.
