Lugenia Hubbard Carter, a beloved teacher, mentor, and matriarch, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas surrounded by her family. Born on January 13, 1938, in Goodnight, Texas to Cleo and Rhetta Hubbard, Lugenia dedicated her life to nurturing the minds and hearts of those around her. She was a beacon of kindness and generosity who touched countless lives through her unwavering commitment to education and family.
Lugenia's passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom; she inspired generations of students with her warmth and enthusiasm. Her ability to connect with young minds made learning an adventure filled with joy and discovery. As a mentor to many aspiring educators herself, she instilled confidence in others while fostering their love for knowledge.
In addition to being an exceptional educator, Lugenia was a devoted wife to Richard Carter. Their marriage exemplified love and support throughout their years together. Lugenia cherished every moment spent with Richard as they built a beautiful life filled with laughter, adventure and shared dreams.
As a mother to Michael Carter and mother-in-law to Cinda Carter, she embraced her role wholehearted-offering guidance infused with wisdom while encouraging independence. The bond they shared was one rooted in unconditional love that will forever resonate within their hearts.
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Taira Hanna, Shandra Hollingsworth, along with great-grandchildren Braxton Carter; Aurora Hanna; Abigail Hanna; Madelynne Hanna and Makenzi Hollingsworth—all of whom were blessed by Lugenia’s boundless love and support. She took immense pride in each milestone they achieved—celebrating birthdays, academic achievements or simply sharing stories over family dinners.
Lugenia had an outgoing spirit that drew people toward her effortlessly—a friend who listened without judgment or reservation—and this quality endeared her even more deeply into the community fabric surrounding Stratford, TX. In honor of her love and devotion to literature, memorial donations may be directed, per family request, to the Stratford Public Library after services conclude.
Lugenia is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Cinda Carter; her granddaughters and their husbands, Taira and Michael Hanna and Shandra and Kyle Hollingsworth; and her great-grandchildren, Braxton Carter, Aurora Hanna (16), Abigail Hanna (16), Madelynne Hanna (13) and Makenzi Hollingsworth (3). She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Carter: her sisters, Mary Joyce Cory, Montie Goodin and Ann Anderson.
A funeral service honoring Lugenia's remarkable life will take place at Crossroads Church in Amarillo on Monday morning, December 16, 2024, at 10:00 am followed by graveside service at Goodnight Cemetary in Goodnight, TX at 2 pm—a final farewell befitting such an extraordinary woman whose impact will endure long past today’s goodbye. Lugenia will be available for viewing on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Schooler Funeral Home from 2 pm to 6 pm.
