Maria Cruz Santana

Maria Cruz Santana, lovingly known as Mama Cuy, 102, of Dumas, Texas, passed away Friday, August 31, 2007. Services will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at 10:00 A.M., at the Templo Elim Asamblea de Dios Church, Dumas, Texas. Officiating will be Jose Contreras, minister of the church, assisted by Rev. H. L. Stevens. Burial will follow at Northlawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Morrison Funeral Directors. Cruz was born May 5, 1905, in Jimenez, Coah. Mexico, to Luciano and Maria de Jesus Aldape, along with a sister and seven brothers, all of Mexico. She married Juan Santana in 1938 in Saragosa, Coah. Mexico. She was a Dumas resident for 62 years, having moved to Dumas in 1945. In 1981, she earned her U. S. citizenship and, in 2002, she was voted Dumas Lions Club Old Timer of the Year. When Cruz turned 100, she received a Texas flag from Rep. Swinford, along with the certificate showing it had flown over the state capitol. She also received a birthday greeting from President George W., and First Lady, Laura Bush of which she was very proud. There was never a dull moment around Cruz and she always offered an open door to anyone. Lets feed them all was her belief. She was a very devoted member of the Templo Elim Asamblea de Dios Church. She loved working in her yard, gardening and flowers. She doted on her beloved parrot, Lorrito. Throughout her lifetime, she raised two complete families and buried over 30 of her loved ones. Through all her trials and tribulations her faith never wavered and it gave her the strength to continue to the end. She thanked her Heavenly Father for letting her remain here for so many years, as well as her daughters, family, sister and all her wonderful friends. Maria Cruz Santana was preceded in death by her husband, Juan Santana, in 1967, as well as by step-children: Minerva Campos, Elisa Mendez, Hermilia Padares, Andrea San Miguel, Jose Francisco Santana; and by daughters: Juanita Botello and Lupita Caldaron. Survivors include: daughters, Amelica Grubbs and husband, Mickie Ray of Winnsboro, TX, and Mercedes Rodriguez and husband, Socorro of Dumas, TX; son, Johnny Santana of Dumas, TX; sister, Mercedes Aldape of Dumas, TX; and approximately 401 grandkids, counting all the way up to the fifth generation. The family will be will be at 1024 Porter, Dumas, Texas.
