Marjory Arlene Munden

Marjory Arlene Munden, 79 of Stratford, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2015. Graveside services are scheduled for 10 o'clock on the morning of Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Stratford Cemetery with Rev. Steve Ulrey, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors. Marjory was born April 18, 1936 in Stratford, TX to Homer and Virgie Mathews of Kerrick, TX. She attended Kerrick School until 1950 when it consolidated with Stratford. She attended Stratford schools until her senior year when she married Alvin Bachman, who was in the Air Force. They moved to Tucson, Arizona, where she finished high school. Alvin was transferred to Travis Air Force Base and they moved to Sacramento, CA. they divorced and she went to work in California State government as a secretary, first in the Department of Agriculture, then the Treasury Department. She also attended law school for a year. She then met the Deputy State Treasurer, Richard Munden. There were married in 1968, and made their home in Sacramento. They became interested in restoring old houses and the city center. They bought and restored several. They also founded the Sacramento Old City Association, which became instrumental in preserving many old houses in the city center. Marjory became a real estate salesperson. In 1982, they left California and bought an alfalfa farm south of Raton, NM and moved to a house in Raton. Dick also opened an accounting practice in Raton and Marjory assisted. After a few years, they sold house and farm and moved to a farm outside of Claude, TX. Dick opened an accounting practice in Claude. Marjory attended West Texas A&M and after a long and varied college attendance including stops at Texas Tech and Sacramento State she finally got a degree in Accounting and became a Certified Public Accountant and joined Dick in the accounting firm of Munden and Munden. When the farm got to be too much work for them in the early nineties they sold the farm and moved to Stratford. Dick Munden died in 1996. Marjory maintained the accounting practice alone until 2013 when ill health forced her to retire. In addition to her husband, Dick, she is preceded in death by her parents: Homer and Virgie Mathews. Marjory is survived by her brother Gary Mathews; stepson: Richard Munden, Jr; aunt: Mary Hill; and many cousins.
