Mary Wayne Spurlock, 81 of Amarillo went home peacefully to be with Jesus on Friday, Oct. 12, 2018 in Amarillo, TX. A private family burial will precede Celebration of Life services to be held at 11 o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at First United Methodist Church of Stratford. She will lie in state at Morrison Funeral Home of Stratford on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
Mary Wayne was born January 27, 1937 in Galveston, TX to Wayne and Ruth Allen Tinkler. Her family made El Paso, TX their home when she was 10 years old. She attended Austin High School in El Paso and was very active in Choir and Journalism programs.
Mary Wayne met the love of her life, Neal Spurlock, while he was serving in the Air Force. They were married August 29, 1954 in El Paso, TX.
The newlywed couple moved to the Spurlock Community, Stratford, TX, where they made their home, began farming and raised their four children. Mary Wayne enjoyed teaching Sunday School at Spurlock Chapel, and later loved to sing in many different church choirs. An avid seamstress, she sewed for her children, grandchildren and many others. She made and donated to mission programs hundreds of pieces of children's clothing.
She served as the District I Director of the Texas Association for Family and Community Education from 1995-97 in Amarillo. She also served as the 2001-02 TEEA District I Director and was the District I Director for the Texas Extension Education Association, Inc., from 2001-03.
In 2003, Mary Wayne was named the Outstanding Woman of the Prairie Flowers Club.
Mary Wayne was affectionately known as Aunt Bear, Aunt Wayne, GramBear, and GramWayne and was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her son Jeffrey Wayne Spurlock, sisters Jacque Scifres and Patricia Sparrow, and 9 nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Neal; daughter Susan Spurlock-Rawlins and husband Donny of Fritch, son Wesley Spurlock and wife Susie of Stratford, daughter Kathy Plunk and husband Max of Lawton, OK.
She is also survived by her brother Dr. Duane Tinkler and wife Jeanie of Amarillo and sister-in-law Ramona Spurlock (Aunt Moy), also of Amarillo.
Grandchildren surviving her include Kelby Friemel and wife Amber of Phoenix, AZ; Crystal Hicks and husband Brett of Amarillo; Annie Dozier and husband Jason of San Antonio; Brady Plunk and wife Julie of Lebanon, TN; Walter Spurlock and wife Nicole of Stratford; Cody Plunk and wife Madison of Norman, OK; and Jennie Spurlock of Detroit, MI.
Great grandchildren include Hailey Simmons, Molli Lee, Brecken Lee, Kennedy Dozier, Landry Dozier, Van Dozier, Anderson Plunk, Lucy Plunk, and William Agustin (Augie) Spurlock.
She is also survived by 35 plus nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the entire staff at Brookdale Medi Park West Retirement Home for the wonderful loving care they provided to Mary Wayne, Neal and family.
