Mary B. Thornton, 93, formerly of Sunray, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2019. Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Sunray Baptist Church with Rev. Phillip Hilton, former minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Lane Memorial Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 o'clock to 7 o'clock in the evening on Friday, March 8, 2019, at Morrison Funeral Directors in Dumas. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
Mary was born on January 6, 1926 in Coalgate, OK to William Abner and Amanda Ellen (Gibbs) Weathers. She married Grover Lawson Thornton on August 15, 1942 in Duncan, OK; he preceded her in death in 1986. The couple would move to Sunray where they would make their home and raise their children. Mary was a very accomplished seamstress and worked for Karrosel Fabrics in Sunray where she made many dresses, men's suits and other clothing. She later worked for the City of Sunray. One of Mary's favorite things to do was to travel. She enjoyed her sorority sisters and loved her family, friends and her church, Sunray Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, son: Johnny Thornton; two sisters: Catherine and Retha.
Mary is survived by her children: Jimmy Lawson Thornton of Amarillo, TX, Fannie M. Thornton Cameron and husband Richard of Amarillo, TX, Mary Sue Thornton Ritchey of Dalhart, TX, Eddie Joe Thornton and wife Lupe of Dumas, TX, Glenda J. Thornton Brittain and husband Kenneth of Conway, AR and Helen Jean Thornton Stewart of Amarillo, TX; grandchildren: Brian J., Wendy, Stuart, John, Mary, Mandy, Melissa, Brian and Jennifer; 27 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren; sisters: Marie Goree of Paris, TX, Ruby Johnson and Wilma Duesmann both of Marlow, OK.
