Mike was born on March 12, 1966, in Dumas, TX to Jim and Donna (Purcell) Hayhurst. He grew up in Dumas and graduated from Dumas High School in 1984. He was united in marriage to Lori Barnes on August 5, 1989 in Dumas. Mike worked for Energy Transfer for over 30 years and also owned and operated Dumas Insurance Agency, Affordable Storage and LM Properties. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and anything fast, including street cars, race cars, dirt bikes and street bikes. Mike loved to cook for his family and friends and especially loved crawfish.
It’s impossible to sum up Mike’s life and legacy in a few words but if you had to choose, it would be faith – family – fun.
Mike was a Christian man whose main focus in life was leading others to Christ. He loved the Lord more than anything in life and was not timid about telling people about our Savior. He shared the love of Christ through missions, working at the South Texas Children’s Home, and volunteering for the prison ministries. You could not know Mike without knowing his faith.
Mike put his family above all else in this world. He loved and adored his wife of 33 years, Lori, who he affectionally described as “smokin’ hot.” Mike and Lori had 2 children Cody and Ariel who were the center of Mike’s universe. Mike was a proud grandpa to Jaxon, Jeremiah, and Jazlynn. Mike had a way to make anyone he met feel like an old friend. He had numerous friends that he considered family.
Yes, Mike was a man of faith and a family man, but he also knew how to have fun. He was a prankster and loved to create laughter in others. Mike was constantly cutting up and telling funny stories and had an infectious laugh. His hobbies included falconry, dirt bikes, street bikes, hunting and fishing. Mike enjoyed living life in the fast lane with race cars, motorcycles and anything that was fast. He was a hard worker, smart businessman and entrepreneur owning his first gas station at age 18.
Mike left a mark on this world with his heart and generosity. We all know he is with our Lord and Savior in Heaven cutting up with those we have already lost while waiting for his family, friends, and all the people he has led to the Lord to join him.
He was preceded in death by his brother: Jamie Hayhurst; maternal and paternal grandparents: Wayne and Ann Purcell, Jim and Deana Hayhurst.
