Odell Whitwell, 90, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2011. Services are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Morrison Memorial Chapel in Dumas with Bill Mitchusson, Odells nephew, officiating. Interment will follow in Dumas Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
Odell was born on June 22, 1921 in Hedley, Texas to Thomas and Sarah Whitwell. He served his country in the Merchant Marines. Odell was united in marriage to Marie Thompson in 1941, in Mangum, Oklahoma. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Odell had been a resident of the Dumas community since 1940. He was a member of Sixth and Meredith Church of Christ.
Odell was employed as a chemist at American Zinc in Dumas for thirty years. After the plant closed, he served as a Superintendent at a rock crusher plant in San Saba, Texas for five years, then returned to Dumas and worked for Dekalb until his retirement. He was a beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Odell enjoyed fishing and he loved to travel. He especially enjoyed trips to Alaska with his beloved wife, Marie. Odell will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Sarah Whitwell, his brother, Orbin Whitwell, his sister, Opal Whitwell Reed, and his niece, Pat Reed.
Odell is survived by his wife, Marie of the home two daughters, Lora Aldrich and husband Sam of Dumas, and Donna Stephenson and husband Randy of Pampa six grandchildren, Stephanie Aldrich Griffin and husband Gary, Jennifer Aldrich Cockrill and husband Tony, Lisa Aldrich Barbosa and husband John, Bryan Stephenson and wife Mariana, Shelley Stephenson Spencer and husband Brant, and Aimee Stephenson one sister, Latina Whitwell Smith of Plainview thirteen greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials be to the Alzheimers Association, 2200 W. 7th Street, Amarillo, TX 79106, or to the American Cancer Society, 403 Pear, Dumas, TX 79029.
The family will be at 222 Cherry in Dumas.
