Roy E. Pennington, 80, passed away Monday, July 20, 2009 in Amarillo. Graveside services will be held at 9:30 AM, Thursday July 23, 2009 at Northlawn Memorial Gardens followed by a memorial service at 10:30 AM at First Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Howe, pastor of the church officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Roy E. Pennington was born October 3, 1928 in Roberts County, Miami, Texas to Porter and Ricie Pennington. He graduated from Miami High School in 1947 and attended Wayland College until 1949. He received his Bachelors degree from the University of North Texas in 1951 and his Masters degree from West Texas AM in 1968. He then received his Administrator Certification from West Texas AM in 1968. On July 26, 1950 he married Josephine Gregory.
Roy was a teacher and coach in Stratford, Darrouzett, Spearman, Clayton, NM, and Perryton. He was a school administrator in Perryton and Dumas and retired from Dumas in 1991. He was the field representative for the Texas Association of School Administrators from 1992 until 2005. Roy promoted the establishment of the Panhandle Area Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development and served as the organization's first president. He was a member of Retired Educators Association of Dumas READ and the Retired School Superintendents Association of the Texas Panhandle. He was a finalist for Superintendent of the Year in Texas in 1987. He was past president of District 16 Retired School Personnel Association and a District 16 representative to the Texas Retired Teacher Association Legislative Committee. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Texas Retired Teacher Foundation.
He was a member of the Kiwanis in Perryton and served as the president. He was a Dumas Noon Lions Club member. Roy was a member in the Chamber of Commerce in Perryton and Dumas and was an active worker in the United Way. He had been a resident of Dumas since 1975 and was a member of the First Baptist Church serving as the treasurer. He also served as a Deacon of the church in Perryton and Dumas.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Edna, Grace and Wanda and his brother, John.
Survivors include; Josephine Jo of the home; daughters, Roxanne Cindy Strickland and husband, Rickey of Dumas, Suzanne Penny Pattillo and husband, Darrell of Flower Mound, and Rebecca Becky Davidson and husband Chief of Kearney, NE; grandsons, Cody and Caynon Strickland and Steele and Sawyer Davidson; granddaughters, Keyann and Kylee Strickland and Hannah and Addison Pattillo; great-grandsons, Braygon and Colton Strickland.
The family suggests memorials be to Retired Educators Association, PO Box 643, Dumas, TX 79029 or to a favorite charity.
The family will be at 1001 Bennett in Dumas.
