She was born Ruth Elaine Gregory on December 27, 1914 in Pontocola, Mississippi to Jud and Lucy Gregory. She moved to Ben Wheeler at the age of 12 and then to Borger at 17. She graduated from high school in Borger in 1933, where she met and married Hugh Tot Lane. She lived in Moore County for 56 years, 28 years in Sunray and the past 28 in Dumas.
Ruth and Tot had four wonderful children before Tot preceded her in death in 1968; they were happily married 35 years. Ruth was a wonderful homemaker and a devoted mother and grandmother. The majority of her life she has dedicated to raising her special needs son, Jed.
Ruth enjoyed volunteer work immensely. She spent years as a volunteer Rose Lady at Dumas Memorial Hospital and also delivered Meal on Wheels. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Dumas, where she was active in the Young at Heart Sunday school class. She had an amazing faith in God that she passed through her family and will forever be her legacy.
Ruth was an amazing woman. She was a kindred spirit to her family, always with a kind and encouraging word. She took great pride in her family and welcoming all the new additions. She loved to dance and enjoy her life; her zest for living will be missed by all who knew her.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; all seven of her siblings; a daughter-in-law, Arnita Lane; and a granddaughter, Jatawn Wells.
Survivors include her children, Joy Lane Hornsby of Amarillo, Jay Lane of Stratford and Judy Scribner and husband, Archie and Jed Lane, all of Dumas; 10 grandchildren, Deana and Kent Holman of Bartlesville, Okla., Justin and Shannon Lane of Morse, Brent and Pam Lane of Euless, Jana and Brandon Pasley of Canyon and Gary and Dawn Wells of Amarillo; and 16 great-grandchildren who all loved her dearly.
