Ruth Agnes Troutman Wells was surrounded by love and memories when she departed this life on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 in Lubbock, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 18, 2007 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Wagoner, former pastor officiating, assisted by Rev. Weldon Crowley. There will be a reception for family and friends in Memorial Hall following the service.
Ruth was born January 28, 1916 to Hattie and Len Troutman. She moved to Dumas with her family at the age of six from Iowa Park. The Troutman family lived east of Dumas on the six mile corner. She attended school in Dumas and received her teaching degree from West Texas State University. She taught at Palo Duro School. On May 23, 1937, she married Gaston Buck Wells and they were married over 64 years until his death in August 2001. Through the years she was supportive of Buck, a farmer and cattleman and as he pursued various other business opportunities. Ruth was a homemaker and community volunteer. At the age of 81 she was named Volunteer of the Year for the Dumas Memorial Hospice. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for 74 years. She was also involved in New Beginnings, a Christian retreat center. Ruth was an example of Gods love to all who knew her and she was a humble servant to Christ. Her unfailing faith and devotion to her family was witnessed through her large circle of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Herman and Carl Troutman; and a sister, Louise Conrad.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Jimmy Wells and wife, Jerre of Amarillo; two daughters, Sharon Bennett and husband, Mike of Lubbock and Janet McWhirter and husband, Jim of Plano; sisters-in-law Pat Troutman and Bertie Murphy of Dumas; 11 grandchildren, Scott Wells and wife Shelia, Gary Wells and wife, Dawn, Rachel Price and husband, Gus, Jenks Currie and wife, Erica, Audra Currie, Jeff Bennett and wife Alison, Mark Bennett and wife, Viki, Whitney Donaldson and husband, Jay, Ryan McWhirter, Zack McWhirter, Grant McWhirter and wife, Brooke; 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a host of extended family and friends.
