Sterling Nilsson

Sterling Nilsson, 87, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2008 in Amarillo. Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dale Cain, interim pastor of First Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors Sterling Nilsson was born August 26, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois to Reinhold and Ellen Nilsson. He graduated from Northwestern University with a BS in marketing and from the US Merchant Marine academy with a degree in marine engineering. In 1939 he married Becky Harris in Columbus, Ohio. He worked for Swift Packing Co. for 45 years before his retirement. He began his career as a messenger boy and became a manager of several beef plants. He transferred 10 times and always said that there was not a bad place to live in the U.S.A. Sterling was a longtime board member at Sun Bank. He was a member of Dumas Noon Lions Club and of Investment Club. He served on the Moore County Appraisal District Board, Dumas Zoning Board and was a volunteer driver for the Cancer Society. He was a resident of Chicago before coming to Dumas in 1975. He was a member and an Elder of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include; his wife Becky Nilsson of the home; daughter Martha Nilsson of Dallas; sister, Glendora Larson of Longwood Florida; grandchildren, Michael and Becca; and 4 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 1118, Dumas, TX 79029 or to a favorite charity.
