Wanda Thaxton, 78, of Amarillo, died Monday, March 16, 2009, in Amarillo. Services will be held Thursday, March 19, 2009, at 2:00 PM in First Baptist Church Chapel of Amarillo with Rev. Jeff Raines, Associate Pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Dan Turner, Music Specialist for the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Graveside services will be held at 4:30 PM in Northlawn Memorial Gardens in Dumas. Arrangements by Morrison Funeral Directors of Dumas.
Mrs. Thaxton was born September 12, 1930, in Quitaque, TX to James Elmore and Mary Ella Bass Roden and spent her childhood in Shamrock, TX. On April 17, 1953, she married John Thaxton in Clayton, NM. She was a resident of Dumas from 1954 until moving to Amarillo in 1998. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Dumas and currently a member of First Baptist Church of Amarillo. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. Mrs. Thaxton was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her family was her greatest joy, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on September 15, 1990; her parents and sisters Wilma Arnold and Juanita Blake.
Survivors include: daughters: Beverly Redelsperger and husband Arlen of Amarillo; Rodena Mote and husband Dannye of Frisco, TX; Leslie Thaxton of Concord, CA and Tanya Reid of Amarillo; sister: Mary Daniel of Corpus Christi, TX; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many loving and loyal friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to Hopice Care of the Southwest and the Administration and Staff of Canyonview Estates.
Family visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00PM on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia, Amarillo.
